Updates: Pregnancy: ER visit, rest, and ultrasound

by One Frugal Chick on 10/05/2012

So I know this week was very slow on OFC. On Tuesday I was VERY SICK and had to go to the ER.  My hubby took the lovely picture of me posted above, while I was there (he made me smile).  I spent most of Weds. sleeping, since I was so out of it from the day before. Yesterday was good, and we had a an OB appointment in the morning to follow up from my emergency room visit.  Then last night we had the 20 week ultrasound. We found out it’s a girl :) YAY! But they also found a cyst (Choroid Plexus Cyst) on her brain. Also because of the way she was positioned they couldn’t get all the measurements of her heart or facial profile. So we have to go the the hospital on Monday to have a Level II ultrasound done and talk to a doctor who specializes in these sorts of things.  The nurses and ultrasound tech said not to get too worried because although they are not common, they are also not uncommon and generally go away on their own. So hopefully we will know a lot more (good news!) on Monday.

Natasha, I have been one of your readers for a couple years now and love your site! My son is 7 months old, and at our ultrasound they found CPC on his brain as well. I was all shook up and scared (even though they said they thought they would go away on their own). They did blood work and the levels came back great, like my OBGYN said they would. Went back the next month for another ultrasound and the cysts were gone. He was completely healthy! And is now getting into everything lol. Maybe this will help? I liked researching of others who had it to try to ease me. Prayers for you all.

I have little two- year old boy and when I was five-months pregnant, I too found out he had a cyst on his brain. Fortunately, a few months later an ultrasound revealed that it was gone. Phew! I had a friend that had the same thing too, so don’t worry too much about it. I’m sure it will resolve itself soon! I was told even if it stayed there, chances are it wouldn’t harm him in any way. All my testing came back good and the baby looked great otherwise, so they said that was good news, and it was. If you have any questions about it, feel free to email me at jenniferoliva@cox.net. Oh, and don’t go researching it on the Internet! Most of the info on there is total nonsense!

Thanks for updating us on your pregnancy. Congratulations on your baby girl news! Little girls are so special! Hope and pray everything will be fine with the cyst they found… Blessings to you and your family!

Ali October 5, 2012 at 3:29 pm

FYI Natasha: Almost 100% of these sorts of cysts go away on their own according to the medical literature —

‘Regardless of their number, shape or size, choroid plexus cysts are not harmful to the baby…Dr. Peter Doubilet, a Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School, agrees, “That’s one very important fact. CPCs are not harmful, and they nearly always go away by the third trimester of pregnancy.”‘ (source: http://bit.ly/SIbtNe)

Congrats on having a baby girl! (:

Dawn K October 5, 2012 at 9:21 pm

Congrats on the baby girl. I will say that I also have an almost 3 year old son who had the CP Cysts. They took a lot of measurements because it is a sign of something that is called Trisomy 18. They found his cysts at 18 weeks and by 23 weeks they were gone. I really would not be alarmed. I will say that when they do the ultrasounds they are looking for any heart malformations and any malformations and length problems with their arms, legs, feet, and hands. I really don’t think you should have anything to worry about. When they gave me this news my world came crashing down and we did all types of blood tests and everything was crazy for a few weeks. Just know that they will go away. Statistics are that 1 in 5 babies have the Choroid Plexus cysts and only 1 in 5,000 babies lead to something like Trisomy 18.
