Frugal Fun Ideas with Brie: Upcycled Dresser

by Breezy Brie on 10/08/2012

I have a new favorite Wednesday night activity – driving up and down the streets checking out TRASH! :) haha, it’s true. We need a lot of furniture now that we have a NEW HOUSE, and I figure if I can find something on the curb, even if we only use it for a little while until we find something better, it’s totally worth it.

Anyway, I took my friend Rita on one of these trips with me, and we found this dresser. It had definitely seen better days, but it had all of the drawers and they opened nicely, so we picked it up!
Desser: Before
I tried to use de-glosser so I wouldn’t have to sand, just like I did for our kitchen cabinets. But it didn’t seem to work on the dresser, weird, but whatever. I also decided, since this is just a dresser from the curb, I wasn’t going to spend a lot of time on it. So I decided not to sand or prime…

I used some paint that the previous owners had left in the garage, a nice off-white color. And then I bought some oil rubbed bronze spray paint to give the hardware a quick makeover (new hardware can be expensive!). So, all I spend on this dresser was the $7 for the spray paint (I used my $10 Lowe’s giftcard I got for FREE for “planting a tweet” – has anyone else used theirs yet?) – and I have plenty left that I will use for other projects!

Here’s the final product in our spare bedroom! Not bad for off the curb, right?! And it seems to be just fine without the sanding and priming.
Dresser - AfterTreasure from the Trash - After Have you ever picked up something sweet from the curb? Did it need a makeover too?!

great work,it looks absolutely beautiful :-)

here in the UK we are planning something similar, taking unwanted furniture from the streets and upcycling it, employing and training homeless people to do the work. if you like the idea let us know, more info on the website.
thanks!

Thank you! That is a great idea. I can’t believe all the good stuff that people throw out. Do you go though the streets to find furniture or do people donate it and you pick it up? That’s really awesome – heading over to check it out now!

Now that was one ugly dresser, now it’s a beauty! Looks old enough to still be solid wood. Myself, I will not have any chipboard/pressboard furniture in my house!

Yes, I’ve picked up something from the curb! I gave my brother a nice! outdoor sofa for his porch that we grabbed up from the roadside. One summer, my fiance and I went curb surfing and got floor lamps, TVs, an armoir, speakers and a glider. Over 3 months we made $450 bucks from selling it all on Craigslist.

You did a great job on this, it looks brand new.
What color is that on your walls, it’s gorgeous!!

@Mandeena – Thanks so much. I love the color too – and it’s actually an “oops” color from Home Depot which means it was only $7 for a gallon instead of $30-something – SWEET! So I know that doesn’t help you much in finding this color…but maybe you’ll find a sweet opps paint too!
